‘The Phoenix’ mural in Sky Harbor finds a new home after airport renovations PHOENIX – As work continues on a new Skytrain station at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, a popular work of art is getting a new home. The mural “The Phoenix” was rescued from the demolition of Terminal 2 in February 2020 and was unveiled in the rental car center on Friday, October 22nd. It’s a 75 foot wide mural created by artist Paul Coze that has been welcoming travelers to Arizona for more than 50 years. “It is not easy to move a treasure from Phoenix in the midst of airport operations to such a top airport,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. The mural is designed to depict the past, present, and future of Arizona. “This is the first time we’ve decided to use public funds to create a work of art,” said Vice Mayor Carlos Garcia. “This work of art itself tells a whole story. It tells where we are today. ”In the artwork there are depictions of indigenous peoples with earth and sand from several tribes across the state. “From railroads and ranching to mining and technology, from the importance of the sun to water and agriculture,” Gallego said. “As in 1960, the mural represents our community.” The city guides say they look forward to looking into the future together. “Make sure we take care of those who make this progress possible, namely the workers.
