PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – Police have identified the U.S. Postal Service driver who was killed in a major accident in Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon. It happened on 52nd Street north of McDowell Road around 6:30 p.m. When the firefighters arrived, a USPS vehicle burned and a person in another vehicle had to be removed from their car. In an update on Wednesday morning, police said the mail van was pulled on the side of the road when it was hit by a van. At this point the USPS vehicle caught fire. 59-year-old Michael Blanton was pronounced dead at the scene. Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller said the other driver, a man in his thirties, had been rushed to the hospital in critical condition. His status was later upgraded to Serious Condition. Police say impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash. An investigation is ongoing. Copyright 2021 KPHO / KTVK (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation). All rights reserved.
