PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – The man who police say caused a fatal accident near 15th Avenue and Bethany Home Road on Monday morning had meth hidden in his wallet, according to court documents. PD: Suspected disabled driver runs over a red light in Phoenix; Police records indicate that 19-year-old Pablo Cruz Meza was driving east on Bethany Home Road when he ran a red light on 15th Avenue and met a Nissan Sentra heading south. The driver of the Sentra, 23-year-old Selemawit Negash, died in hospital from her injuries. According to Meza, he told police he was driving 40 to 80 mph and did not see the red light. Police say officers found a glass pipe, often used to smoke meth, in Meza’s car, with debris in it. During the interview at the hospital, detectives noticed Meza’s bloodshot, watery eyes and noticed that his pupils were also dilated. Meza’s blood pressure and heart rate were also above average, according to the police. Meza admitted to the police that he had smoked meth and marijuana in the past, but also refused to say when he had last used it. When the police searched Meza’s wallet, they found a folded dollar bill with a crystal-like substance believed to contain meth. According to the police, Meza did not have a current and valid driver’s license as his driver’s license has currently been revoked for not appearing in court. Police found that Meza had previously been arrested on September 2 for bringing in or sheltering illegal immigrants. Meza has been tried for drug driving and may face charges of negligent homicide and dangerous possession or use of drugs. Copyright 2021 KPHO / KTVK (KPHO Rundfunkgesellschaft). All rights reserved.
