Investigators say the girl was injured when one of the power windows “shot up” on her while she was playing in a parked car in Phoenix. Janette Fennell is the president of Kids and Cars, a national not-for-profit organization that addresses child car safety issues. Fennell said a few children die from electric windows in cars every year. “People don’t understand the force that these windows raise. It has a force between 30 and 40 pounds and it takes 22 pounds of force to break the windpipe.” Said Fenell. Fennell says that the bottom line is that kids don’t go in unattended or stay near cars. “Temperatures can rise and children can die very quickly from the heat, but maybe they don’t think about the dangers of electric windows, maybe they don’t think about children knocking cars into aisle or trunk,” Fennell said. Police say there is currently no evidence of foul play. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner will determine the cause and type of death. The girl’s identity is not yet known.
