City of Phoenix Hopes Its Mobile Career Unit Can Win Global Mayors Challenge Award The City of Phoenix is one of 50 cities in this year’s Bloomberg Global Mayors Challenge with an idea to bring employers and job seekers together. FOX 10’s Bailey Miller reports. PHOENIX – The city of Phoenix made it to the finals of the Bloomberg Global Mayors Challenge. The competition recognizes cities for their innovative ideas to enhance their communities, and the city of Phoenix’s idea is to provide career guidance while traveling. As part of the competition, the city of Phoenix has created a mobile career unit that is intended to network employers and job seekers. “Our vision is of a larger unit and multiple workplaces inside for people to do a resume search or get career assistance, personal interviews for career positions, and all of the technology to drive the future,” said Jovanna Park House, special project human resources development manager for the City of Phoenix. More than 600 cities around the world have participated in the Global Bloomberg Mayors Challenge, and the city of Phoenix has now made it into the top 50. The mobile careers unit was created to fill a gap to ensure residents can find jobs and employ employers, especially given the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and recent staff shortages in many industries. We have rising numbers of unemployment in the city and we have residents who have bigger barriers to the job market, “said Park Horse.” We want to be able to remove some of those barriers, and the biggest ones are transportation, so to somehow relieve the residents. “The plan is still in the works, but the goal is to get it into libraries and neighborhoods so that people have direct access and the process is easier for everyone involved. A total of 15 cities will be awarded 1 One million US dollars and this prize money will be used to make plans come true. Winners will be announced in early 2022.
