As soon as you order, fat rust-red potatoes are pushed through a potato press, a Mother’s Day present from your eldest son, and fried to perfection. The result is thick, blocky spears that do the impossible: a deeply browned, crispy exterior with an incredibly creamy, buttery interior. Cut by hand every day, these jagged creations cut into columns are well seasoned with a side dish of their stand-up sauce. Originally made to put on their burgers, people kept coming back asking for a side dish to go with their fries – and rightly so. A top secret mix of mayo and ketchup with just the right mix of herbs and spices. This creamy, dreamy dipper with a touch of heat makes these tubers sing right down to the crispy parts of the bottom. Popular in Glendale since 1979, Allison Young Dazzo’s Dog House 6143 West Glendale Avenue, Glendale Dazzo’s is a nostalgic ode to everything Chicago from the menu to the sports memorabilia on the walls. The dogs are top dogs, but, man, the fries. Freshly cut every day and deep-fried in good old lard, they get hot – crispy on the outside, tough on the inside – and just the right amount of fat. So they perfected the fry time and found the crispy sweet spot to create a waffle with an ideal outside yet crispy inside and put it in their secret seasoning. There is Lebni, a creamy Mediterranean yoghurt dip with lemon, and a green hot sauce with a jalapeno and garlic kick. Served in a stainless steel cylinder lined with paper, the fries arrive loud and proud, as if they were giving themselves a standing ovation – and rightly so. The hand-cut shoelaces are slim but not too thin, sprinkled with smoked paprika and herbs and served with a creamy paprika aioli that perfectly accentuates its crispy finish. In addition to serving up monster chicken sandwiches, Monroe’s also serves french fries – a whole box full, ribbed for your pleasure, for only $ 3.50 (Score!). Perfectly crispy in peanut oil with a strong shake of Cajun seasoning that sticks to any split edges, they don’t need to be dipped (period), but heat seekers can do it with a side of their kick-it sauce for 50 cents. Click to enlarge Nothing mushy about these sweet potato fries from Seed Shack. Allison Young Seed Shack 3861 East Baseline Road, Gilbert Sweet potato fries can get soggy quickly. Not so at Seed Shack, a vegan restaurant in Gilbert that serves them just right. Incredibly long and wonderfully crispy, these tubers come out with a delightful golden exterior. Points for seasoning too: they’re dusted with a touch of kosher salt, paprika, black pepper, chili powder, and garlic powder. Be sure to combine them with the homemade Black Bean Burger for vegan convenience in a box.
