PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – Police arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting that killed a woman in a store in West Phoenix near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road. It happened around 1 a.m. on Sunday. Phoenix Police say when police officers arrived at the Funny Farm Lounge parking lot, they found 20-year-old Gloria Zermeno in the parking lot on the ground. According to court records, Zermeno was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. During their investigation, the detectives learned that there had been a fight in the parking lot earlier that night, which included Zermeno. Investigators checked the surveillance video and saw a white car approaching and slowing down near the parking lot, near Zermeno. Multiple shots can be seen firing from the white car before the driver drove away. Zermeno was hit and fell to the ground, according to police. Police records say the fight was due to the security forces escorting a man out of the club earlier that night for not paying. Witnesses identified the man who was brought out and said he was known to drive a 2011 white Jaguar. The white vehicle seen leaving the scene matched the description of the car, and detectives identified a likely reason for the arrest of 37-year-old Vincente Diaz-Vargas. One of the witnesses reportedly identified Diaz-Vargas and claimed to have seen him “armed with a black handgun, which it took from its holster, dismantled and threatened everyone.” The officers found Diaz-Vargas and arrested him. During a house search, the investigators found several handguns and rifles. During an interview with detectives, Diaz-Vargas initially denied the allegations but then admitted to firing a pistol in the parking lot several times because he was upset. Diaz-Vargas is charged with first degree murder. “It is very gratifying for our detectives to be able to do justice to the family so quickly, and it is what they hope for in every single case,” said Sgt. Mercedes Fortune. “To quickly find the person responsible and be able to do some justice to this family.” There are fundraising campaigns to raise money for Zermeno’s funeral.
