Phoenix Building – The Phoenix Building Juneteenth Celebration is a series of vibrant virtual events scheduled from June 13-19. Sunday-Friday events from 7pm to 8pm Saturday events from 12pm to 3pm Start this week-long series with Hart’s Kitchen Soul Food and pick it up at the Pay Forward Cafe. June 13th (Sun) is the opening night. An interview with Kyle Boyle, a social justice activist, pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Coatesville and past president of the NAACP in Westchester, followed by Kyle’s speech on June 10th. And meet the community organizers of this year’s Juneteenth Festival. Art auctions take place weekly. Monday June 14th is art & artist. The works of the artists Dane Tilghman and Diana Hunt can be seen. Dane was interviewed by Orion’s Keith Burles, and Diana’s African American portrait comes to life through a bio read by a local friend over at DIA. Learn how art unlocks the vision of the community. Tuesday June 15 is the story of the theater and children. Kids’ books and fun include FathersRead365 and Oprah’s Storytime. Iron Age actors directed by John Doyle ask us to recreate the historical scenes of Juneteenth and see the truth of the moment. Change your world with stories. Wednesday June 16 is a dance and drum night. Jeannine Osayande from Dunya & Co. performs “Hands Up: Dancing for Justice, a Tribute to Amadou Diallo” at Ursinus College, followed by “Dance of Justice” by creators of several high schools in the Phoenix Building (Blackcellence). Soul food author Adrian Miller celebrates the traditions of the African American community. Cook soul food with Mayor Peter Ascherer and Rosalin Sheklford and learn the hidden secrets of soul food, code quilting and spirituals. Friday June 18 is a family home evening with the Philadelphia magician Ran D Shine. This show is a live performance by Zoom. Have your playing cards, pen, and paper ready. You can also learn your own tricks. Ran D has performed at the Colonial Theater, Multicultural Festival, Penn & Teller Show, and University Circuit. Saturday June 19th is June 19th. Former Senator Andy Diniman received the Juneteenth National Freedom Day Award for his lifelong commitment to social justice and anti-racism. Members of Diversity in Action will discuss the revision and beautification of the memorial for the 100th anniversary of the civil war 1963 (Leaves Park).
