PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A woman was arrested for allegedly causing a fatal accident on Interstate 10 in Phoenix early Friday morning. 24-year-old Andrea Luna was driving a white 2006 Chevrolet van west near 35th Avenue at 4:30 a.m. when she allegedly hit a 2014 Nissan Altima, according to police. The driver of the Altima, 37-year-old Masood Ghafarimanesh, died on the scene. First responders freed Luna from the van. She was reportedly only slightly injured and was rushed to hospital. According to court records, Ghafarimanesh was stopped in the area because of a pedestrian on the emergency lane when Luna allegedly drove after him. Witnesses told police that the hazard warning lights in Ghafarimanesh’s vehicle were blinking at the time of the impact. The Arizona Department of Public Safety officer escorted Luna to the hospital for an impairment test. In the court records, the soldier said that Luna smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking four beers. A detective who spoke to Luna later discovered that Luna smelled of alcohol and had watery eyes. According to court documents, Luna told the detective that she went to her friend’s house Thursday night and that her friend drove her to a bar near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Luna reportedly admitted drinking nine to ten beers several hours before the accident. After returning to her boyfriend’s house later that night, Luna drove to her boyfriend’s house near Interstate 17 and Thomas Road. She says she stayed there for about an hour before heading south on I-17 onto I-10 west. According to the explanation of the likely reason for the arrest, Luna said she felt an impact and then passed out. Court records show Luna drove 71 mph and hit the brakes two seconds before the accident. Luna was booked on suspicion of negligent homicide. Copyright 2021 KPHO / KTVK (KPHO Rundfunkgesellschaft).
