PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – Three men were arrested for alleged involvement in a people smuggling ring in the Phoenix area. On April 22, a 25-year-old woman reported to the Department of Homeland Security that she was being sexually abused by people smugglers, according to court files. In an interview, the wife told the Phoenix Police Department that the people who allegedly sexually abused her were part of a people smuggling ring that she paid to bring her to the U.S. One of the men who was later identified as Luis Calixto , had told her to sit in the back seat of a car where he would strip her and have sex with her. He then took her back to the house, where she stayed against her will for seven days. Court records indicate that a third person, later identified as 33-year-old Rafael Garcia, was using cocaine at the time. She said she and others in the house were not allowed to go or go outside, but she had consensual sex with Garcia on April 22nd. The police contacted Calixto, Joachin and Garcia for an interview regarding sexual assault. Court records say Calixto told officials that Garcia was the coyote, or leader of the group, and was holding him against his will. He told officers he had been in Arizona for about ten days and had never had sexual relations with the victim. He claimed to be friends with her. However, he admitted he was in the car when the coyotes forced him to drive one of them to the store. According to the court records, Garcia allegedly told detectives that he and the victim were boyfriend / girlfriend and had a sexual relationship for about four days. Garcia told them that he watched Joachin in his bedroom as he stood over the victim who was lying on the bed. He said the room was too dark to know what was going on. Joachim refused to speak to the detectives and denied that anything had happened. None of the three suspects admitted to being involved in the people smuggling ring or being a coyote. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) held the three men while they were given a warrant to search the crime scene and the car. Garcia, Calixto and Joachin are each charged with sexual assault.
