PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – How a man in a wheelchair got into a Phoenix Canal last Sunday is unclear. One thing is certain, he is fortunate enough to be alive after being carried downstream and trapped in running water. It was last Saturday near 36th Street and Baseline when a disabled man in a wheelchair somehow fell out of his seat and at 50. Feet was swept away in the current before a metal grille stopped him. At that point, we knew this was something: a very dangerous situation,” said Justin Hopkins, Phoenix Police Officer . We saw a man stick his head out of the water gasping for air and screaming for help, said Justin Hopkins, a Phoenix police officer. 3TV / CBS 5 “He was scared in the water. He yelled for help and said, ‘Please save me. I’m scared. You will save my life,'” said Jacob Garcia, Phoenix Police Officer. “I didn’t let him go in the water personally. I wanted to save this guy no matter what it took.” Phoenix policeman Jacob Garcia helped rescue a man who fell from a wheelchair into a canal last weekend. 3TV / CBS 5 “He was yelling for help so they knew he was there. If they weren’t there, I don’t know what would have happened, it could have been really bad,” Garcia said. One of the bystanders had a rope that the officers used to get the man out of the water. “I don’t know where he got a rope from, but thank God he had a rope with him. When we got here, he was able to put it in a loop, ”said Hopkins, examined and treated by paramedics from the Phoenix Fire Department. The officials who saved him hope to reunite with the rescued man soon and find out how he is doing. “I joined the police to do things for others, to put others above myself.
