PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A man has died after being hit by a car near 75th Avenue and Indian School Road at around 10 p.m. Saturday night. According to Mercedes Fortune, officials found a man, later identified as 31-year-old Cesar Santos, with life-threatening injuries on the pavement. When the Phoenix Fire Department arrived on site, they pronounced Santos dead. Witnesses told officers that a vehicle was traveling north on 75th Avenue at about 70 mph when it met a pedestrian crossing the street. According to Fortune, Santos was not on a marked zebra crossing at the time of the crash. Upon investigation, officials found evidence that the vehicle, a Dodge Challenger, was a road race. The officers found the driver, who was later identified as 20-year-old Alejandro Bautista. Bautista denied road racing to police but later admitted driving another vehicle. The court records mention that the front hood and windshield suffered significant damage. It was also said that Bautista drove 90 miles per hour. Police arrested Bautista for negligent homicide. Both police officers have been taken to the hospital and are expected to be fine. Early the next morning while the police were at the scene of the accident, an allegedly drunk driver crashed through the traffic barricades and injured two officers. The officers were taken to a hospital but are expected to be fine. This driver was arrested for DUI. Copyright 2021 KPHO / KTVK (KPHO Rundfunkgesellschaft). All rights reserved.
