PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A man was dragged out of a burning apartment early Wednesday morning and taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition. The Phoenix Fire Department said the fire broke out shortly after midnight in an apartment complex near 51st Avenue and Indian School Street. When the emergency services arrived on site, they noticed heavy smoke and fire from the ground floor. Firemen broke into the apartment, found a man in it and took him to safety. The man was treated and taken to hospital in extremely critical condition. Firefighters said another man was able to break out of the apartment before they arrived. He was examined and refused to be taken to the hospital. A woman in her thirties was also injured after jumping from an apartment on the second floor to the first floor. She was examined but also refused to be taken to the hospital. The firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring units.
