PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A woman is dead after being shot by her boyfriend who then turned the gun on himself, Phoenix police said. Mercedes Fortune said officials responded around 10 p.m. on Wednesday after reports of a shooting in a neighborhood to the west on 91st Avenue and McDowell Road. The police arrived and found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. The man, who was later confirmed by police as 26-year-old Cristian Galvez Chairez, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, who was confirmed by police to be 26-year-old Stephanie Saldana, died in the hospital. Saldana’s family are still trying to come to terms with the reality that they are no longer here. “Cristian felt a kind of jealous rage because she didn’t want to unlock her phone,” said Stephanie’s older brother Jonathan Esparza. Saldana’s older sister Denise Hermann says Saldana and Chairez have relationship problems. But Denise says Saldana kept most of these problems to herself. “We tried everything with her,” said Hermann. “And it honestly got to the point where it felt like, what more could we do?” Her loss is another blow to a family who just lost their mother to breast cancer in November. “I can’t explain the pain we’re feeling right now,” said Hermann. “And it doesn’t feel real. Honestly, I feel like I’m dreaming.” Denise wants people to remember Saldana as someone who started putting their lives on the right track. “I just want everyone to remember Stephanie with the loving person she was,” said Hermann. “She was kind, always joking, and just wanted to enjoy life to the fullest.” Stephanie’s family set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses.
