Max Hammer, founder and owner of Hammer Cycles, runs a full service bike shop in downtown White Sulfur Springs.
He takes pride in calling the Greenbrier Valley home and offers the community he loves his entire life of expertise honed on backcountry trails and racetracks.
“White Sulfur Springs is being reborn,” said Hammer.
With new businesses like Hammer’s bike shop, music festivals, restaurants, and breweries coming to White Sulfur Springs, this once densely populated area is beginning to return to its former glory.
Hammer compares the small town’s revitalization project to a phoenix rising from the ashes.
Hammer, a transplant from Phoenix, has always been a mountain person at heart. On every vacation trip to West Virginia, he remarked, “The mountains kept calling my name.”
Now Hammer is an “adopted son” from West Virginia trying to instill similar affection for the Mountain State in others. He sees the state as ripe for the harvest, hoping to attract newcomers to the area and encourage more locals to stay.
Hammer has been cycling since childhood and has been riding regional trails since the 1980s. He has participated in several races, including the dual slalom which led him to the 1990 World Championship.
He has also raced alongside some of the country’s great riders and on some of the most challenging terrain in the country.
In his spare time, Hammer is the head coach of the Greenbrier Valley Hellbenders Youth Mountain Bike Team.
Hammer’s greatest joy is to see the smiles of his customers over the years as they move from beginner bikes to higher quality bikes. He also loves it when whole families start and endure the bike path together.
With several hiking trails nearby, including the Monongahela National Forest and the Greenbrier River Trail, Hammer Cycles and White Sulfur Springs are ideal for the next boom in local business and community development.
Having moved from his garage to a small store and now to a larger business downtown, he is excited to expand his service offering to the Greenbrier County area.
