She witnessed the crash and hurried to her mother. “I only held her hand, but it was already gone,” says Leticia. “There was just blood everywhere.” The family describes Lucy as a caring mother who was always there for him. Alonso was an aspiring soccer star about to graduate from high school. “He didn’t even graduate,” says Leticia. “He was just a little kid.” Phoenix police say the chain reaction accident was caused by a driver dodging to avoid another accident on the road. Investigators tested him for impairment, brought him up for driving under the influence of alcohol and released him. “That they just let him go like nothing, my mom and nephew were just so innocent,” says Leticia.
