A Downtown Phoenix Ambassador is at the hospital after being hit by a suspected drunk driver in DOWNTOWN PHOENIX, AZ (3TV / CBS 5) by a suspected drunk driver. It happened when he was riding his bike home from work on Friday night. With a bright orange shirt and bike and a beard as big as his personality, Hans Hughes has been an ambassador for Downtown Phoenix Inc. for nearly 12 years. As his former colleague and girlfriend Lauren Potter put it, Hughes eats, sleeps and breathes the city. “Hans is a pillar in downtown Phoenix,” said Potter. “That is why it is particularly tragic to know that this has happened to someone like him.” Hughes was riding his bike home after work around 11 p.m. Friday when police said a drunk driver hit him on Fillmore and First Streets. Police quoted the driver and now Hughes is a Banner University medical center recovering from head, face and chest injuries. He had a blood transfusion yesterday. “There’s really no excuse to be a drunk driver these days,” said Potter. “And that something like this should happen to him is really terrible,” said Potter as ambassador, Hughes has taken care of countless people downtown and now he needs your help. To date, a GoFundMe has raised more than $ 20,000 for medical expenses. Potter said it might be a drop in the bucket in the road to recovery, but everything is working. “Any amount can make a difference in healing Hans,” said Potter. Until then, downtown won’t feel quite the same without the bright orange shirt and big beard that guides you through downtown Phoenix. “To know Hans is to love Hans,” said Potter.
