The Pressroom Is Moving From Downtown Phoenix to Tempe

The owners of The Pressroom in downtown Phoenix have announced they are packing up the stage and moving the popular concert and entertainment venue to a new, larger location in Tempe.

News of the move was posted on the venue’s social media on Monday, September 13th, just days before the Full Moon Festival that weekend, its first event in nearly nine months. According to the announcement, The Pressroom, located on Fourth Avenue and Madison Streets, will move to a 40,000 square foot venue, warehouse and practice room at 3125 South 52nd Street in Tempe.

It is slated to reopen on Saturday September 18th for the newest Full Moon Festival.

The property is currently home to 3,125 Studios & Event Venue which have acted as an indoor-outdoor event space, film production studio and rehearsal space for local bands and musicians. (Steve Wilkinson, a co-owner of the company, told the Phoenix New Times that he is becoming a partner in the press room.)

The announcement also states that The Pressroom’s new location in Tempe will be under construction “around the clock” in preparation for reopening this weekend.

More than a dozen upcoming concerts have been announced for The Pressroom over the coming months, including gigs by rapper Drakeo the Ruler on Saturday October 24th, 15th.

The press room is owned by local nightlife entrepreneur Narender Raju (who also owns the Tempe Aura nightclub). It hasn’t hosted an event since it was shut down by the Arizona Department of Health Services in mid-January for failing to follow COVID-19 safety protocols during a jam-packed concert by rapper Polo G’s shutdown-related incident, according to the records of the State of Arizona.)

Calls to the management of The Pressroom were not answered by Monday afternoon.

Why is The Pressroom moving to a new location? One factor could be the sale of the former location to Maricopa County.

According to public records by the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office, in October 2020 the county bought the 40,481-square-foot lot the venue was on from the Wisotsky Family Trust, its previous owner, in October 2020. The sale amount and other details were not disclosed.

It is not known what the district has planned for the building. The historic Wakelin Grocery Warehouse, located south of the property, was demolished in July 2020 and the land is now owned by Maricopa County.

Jessie Caraveo, a county spokeswoman, emailed the New Times that more details about the sale and future plans for the property will follow shortly.
