As the heat in the Phoenix area begins to rise above 110 degrees, the highlands are a way for many residents of the valley to escape the high temperatures. Transportation informs ABC15 Arizona that crews are currently working on the US 60 and of the SR 260 have started road maintenance work in Show Low. ADOT’s Ryan Harding said the US 60 has to work about 11 miles during the summer months. From Sunday evening 8:00 p.m. to Friday morning 6:00 a.m. there will be temporary closures on both the east and west lanes. There will be no construction work on Friday evenings and Saturdays. If drivers need to drive during these periods, a lane will remain open. ABC15 asked Harding why the crews choose to work during this time. “The temperatures are getting warm enough in the highlands and at the higher elevations that it is. It’s a good time to start laying the pavement because it hardens properly,” Harding explained. The SR 260 will also be closed and built between mile posts 342 and 347. Harding also wanted to alert Flagstaff drivers to another project on Historic Route 66 to replace the Rio De Flag Bridge. Here are the specific details for drivers as advertised on the ADOT website: The following round-the-clock PM closings on Historic Route 66 (40B) will occur from Thursday, June 10, 9:00 p.m. through Friday, 6:00 a.m., June 18: the eastbound lanes will be closed on Sitgreaves Street. The west lanes will be closed on Humphreys Street to east Butler Avenue to north San Francisco Street to access north US 180 (Switzer Canyon Drive). US 180 (Humphreys Street) heading south to historic Route 66 (B40) in a westerly direction will be diverted to south Beaver Street to west Butler Avenue Drivers on Historic Route 66 (B40) from east Flagstaff can use Switzer Canyon Drive, to go north, or Ponderosa Parkway to go south and continue west and south on Butler Avenue. Motorists traveling south on US 180 are encouraged to use Switzer Canyon Drive to Historic Route 66 to avoid road congestion.
