PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – It has been two decades – 20 years – since September 11th when 4 planes were hijacked and hit the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, killing thousands of Americans at the exact moment where they found out about the news and it is something they will never forget while many others have lost loved ones. To honor these people, there are events throughout the valley to commemorate the 20th anniversary. September 11th Healing Field Memorial In honor of the people killed on September 11, 2001, Tempe will host three different events throughout the weekend at Tempe Beach Park, including a reading of the names of the victims. Where: Tempe Beach Park When: 10am – 6pm Friday: 30 p.m. Healing Field Tribute – Saturday at 5:30 a.m. – names of victims read out at 5:46 a.m. Candlelight Vigil – Saturday at 7 p.m. Tunnel to Towers 5K Run / Walk – Sunday at 7:30 a.m. For more information on the event, please visit here.2. 20th Anniversary of the September 11th Event Peoria, Glendale and Sun City will come together on September 11th to honor the heroes and victims of the terrorist attacks 20 years ago. Drivers are invited to leave messages and ride under a large American flag hanging from two carts. Stories Behind the Stars WorkshopThe Stories Behind the Stars Workshop is an event in honor of the victims of World War II, but also on September 11th as part of the National Memorial and Service Day. Stories Behind the Stars and Latter-day Saint Church of Jesus Christ are working to put the event together. It’s public. Tower Challenge In honor of those who lost their lives on September 11th, people come together to climb 110 floors and 2071 steps in the Gila River Arena. The fire brigade will be in full operation. Police, military and bomb squad will also be on site. National Day of Service and Remembrance Volunteers at the National Cemetery on Friday to beautify the grounds of the fallen heroes buried there.
