PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – Police say one child is dead and another is in critical condition following a shooting in south Phoenix on Monday morning. It happened in a house near Seventh Street and Broadway Road. Phoenix Police Sgt. Ann Justus says two children, a 2-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, were rushed to hospital after being shot. “We believe the children are siblings,” she said. The two-year-old girl, later identified by police as Esperanza Isidro, died in the hospital. Her brother remains in critical condition on Tuesday morning. A 2-year-old girl is dead and her brother remains in hospital after a shooting in South Phoenix. The mother of the children was arrested by the police on the case. According to police, the 24-year-old mother of the two children was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later arrested by police. The children’s father cooperates with the police. “That’s the question everyone wants to know, isn’t it? Why? Why would you hurt your children? said Jupiter. The detectives are working to gather more information and the investigation is ongoing. The police said the officers had been called into the home about a prior service request. On September 14th, officials reached out to the home for a check welfare call after the father was concerned for the welfare of his wife and children. The officers went to the house, but no one was there. The police contacted the mother by phone, who told the officers that she and the children were fine.
