PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A Phoenix woman might owe her life to a smoke alarm, but she lost her dogs in an early morning apartment fire in Phoenix. Phoenix and Glendale firefighters became the three-story complex at 35th and Dunlap Avenues , west of Cortez Park, around 5 a.m. on Wednesday. When the crews arrived, they saw “large amounts of fire” in an apartment on the first floor. A video from the crime scene showed smoke from the building and several fire engines on the street. According to the fire department, the fire broke out in this unit on the first floor. The woman living there became aware of the fire through her smoke alarm and got out safely. Your dogs, however, do not. While the firefighter was containing the flames in this apartment, the two units above were badly damaged by smoke. The Phoenix Fire Department’s critical response team is helping the 10 people who cannot return to their homes. Firefighters across the country keep saying that working smoke alarms are an essential safety measure for everyone. “Smoke alarms save lives,” the National Fire Protection Association explains on its website. “Smoke alarms, properly installed and maintained, play a critical role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.
