Phoenix PD posted body camera footage and edited a surveillance video of a shooting outside a bar on June 20. PHOENIX – Newly released Phoenix Police footage showed a suspect open fire officer and officers returning fire. It happened in the parking lot of a busy bar. Police said uniformed officers were working off duty in a bar near 96th Avenue and Camelback Road on the night of June 20. A woman at the bar came up to her and indicated that her ex-boyfriend had followed her earlier that night and was worried he might come back to the bar. A short time later, police observed an argument on the outdoor patio and discovered that it was the man they were warned about, 32-year-old Jesse Villasaez. The officers told him to leave the bar. Body camera footage shows an officer approaching him in his truck and asking him to call an Uber. Villasaez said he had already called one. Less than ten minutes later, an officer noticed Villasaez’s truck pulling back into the parking lot behind the bar. The security camera footage shows Villasaez firing shots at the officers from his window as he drives past them. Two officers returned fire. Villasaez fired more shots before escaping the scene. The video below is surveillance video from a nearby store. Clips from the surveillance camera were distributed by Phoenix PD on Friday, but police failed to fully provide the video to 12 News. No one was injured in the shooting. Phoenix Police blocked the busy parking lot when they opened an investigation. Officials found Villasaez less than an hour later. He was taken into custody. Villasaez now faces a serious attack on a police officer and an illegal surrender of gun possession. The Phoenix Police Professional Standards Bureau is investigating whether the officers were justified in their decision to shoot.
