PHOENIX – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Aug. November 2021–

November is National Career Development Month and an opportunity for adult learners and working adults to identify career development opportunities. In early 2021, the University of Phoenix’s Career InstituteTM conducted the Career Optimism IndexTM study, which showed a general level of optimism among American workers about the future of their careers and identified obstacles hindering their progress. One barrier identified was the establishment of a support and mentoring network. Mentoring and advocacy are critical to career success and for many there is no social capital – or a built-in network of connections -.

Universities can provide an effective space for building social capital through networking, inclusive practices, and a focus on career preparation. The University of Phoenix is committed to lifelong and inclusive career development, as evidenced by its commitment to Career Services for Life®. One of the ways in which the university helps its students to build up social capital, career optimism and self-confidence are course-related learning opportunities in the form of Recognized Student Organizations (RSO). Under the general direction of a volunteer faculty advisor or university liaison, RSOs are initiated, installed, and chartered, managed, and maintained entirely by University of Phoenix students.

“RSOs help fuel student leadership development, community engagement and service, professional development, financial education and scholarships, and interpersonal skills development through membership engagement,” said Jelisa Dallas, MS Ed., Program manager for RSOs in the Office of Educational Equity . “The RSO program aims to provide University of Phoenix students from all walks of life with a sense of belonging and support as they balance academic, professional, family and personal responsibilities.”

RSOs at the University of Phoenix are a co-curricular bridge between the classroom and career, offering the opportunity to combine knowledge and skill building with social capital and networking. University students have 14 different RSO offerings where they can join and network, community building, and practice skill building to prepare them for professional development and improvement. Over 48,000 University of Phoenix students are members of RSOs including the National Society for Leadership and Success, Golden Key International Honor Society, Order of the Sword and Shield National Honor Society, Upsilon Phi Delta (Health Professions) Honor Society, and Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business.

During National Career Development Month, students are encouraged to use the University of Phoenix’s Career Services for Life®, including one-on-one coaching, resume reviews, and interview preparation, and consider RSOs as an important option for their career development. University students can visit the University of Phoenix’s RSO page and review program offerings with honors, academic, and professional societies to determine which organization is the right one. Interested parties can email Students.organizations@phoenix.edu to determine the next steps for eligibility and participation.
