Business at Taco Boy’s on Roosevelt Row is in full swing with support from the Suns in a historic playoff run. “It just helps that the Suns are in the finals. Everyone comes downtown because the stadium is almost a mile lower, you know what I mean? So it just helps,” said Francisco Cornejo, owner of Taco Boy’s. Last year at this time, the COVID-19 pandemic shell shocked local business owners like Cornejo, leaving them wondering if they will make it financially. “July 5th last year was completely closed here. Like it was a ghost town and right now it’s crazy how much can change in a year,” said Cornejo. Just a few blocks away at the Jackalope Gastropub, there isn’t a major Suns series to prepare for. “We had to look at the game days and make a lot of adjustments. When can they come in and just prepare for the volume we’re getting here, ”said Katherine McMahan, bartender and manager at Jackalope Gastropub. The downtown revival runs parallel to the rebirth of the Suns franchise. “Seeing it all come back to life and then adding the excitement of the whole city revolving around the suns,” said McMahan. An entrepreneurial mindset is no longer geared towards survival, but now about winning. “Imagine a parade. Harvesting the fruits of a parade downtown. This is going to be crazy,” Cornejo said.
