The Grand Rapids-based Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors hired Michael Gantt as COO and appointed Sandra Cramonlini to its board of directors.
Gantt will work with the Phoenix Society’s leadership and board of directors to develop and implement a strategic business plan while taking responsibility for building a sustainable organization.
Gantt brings 25 years of leadership experience in non-profit organizations. Prior to the Phoenix Society, he was CFO for John Ball Zoo, where he served as the CEO’s right-hand man to ensure strategic decision-making in financial or business decisions.
He also worked with the organization’s board of directors on financial integrity, oversight and best practice issues. In addition, Gantt worked with colleagues to develop and maintain financial management best practices in support of John Ball’s mission.
Gantt also has previous experience with other nonprofits such as the Family Institute at Northwestern University and the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.
“Michael’s 25 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, finance and strategic growth will add incredible value to our team, the Phoenix Society and the Burn community we serve,” said Amy Acton, executive director of Phoenix Society.

Cramonlini is a health advisor who has retired after 40 years in the healthcare sector and remains committed to the burn community. Prior to retirement, Cramonlini was the Nursing Administrator for the Leon S. Peters Burn Center and Program in Fresno, California, laying a solid foundation for her ability to provide adult and pediatric patient care, critical care, supply chain and revenue management. Cramonlini is also a Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR) trainer for peer supporters of burn victims.
“Sandra’s career as a nurse and her role as director of one of the most advanced burn centers serving the needs of those affected by burn injuries in the acute environment and post-discharge makes her perfect for our board of directors,” said Acton. “We focus on strategies that will facilitate the transition from acute care to living with a burn injury.”
