PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – The airports were busy this weekend, although ticket sales have declined overall. The TSA screened 5.3 million travelers Friday through Sunday. That’s more than double the number of travelers we saw at the same time last year. As people flown in and out of Sky Harbor International Airport, some noticed that the flights looked very different compared to 2020. “I took a few last year and we had space in between and now they’re all wrapped up,” said Dylan Sievert of Tempe. “Doesn’t feel like we’re pretty far apart anymore.” The CDC urged unvaccinated travelers to stay home this weekend as COVID cases rise. Those flying in and out of Sky Harbor had mixed thoughts about it. “I would like to believe that most of them were (vaccinated),” Sievert said. “I’m vaccinated,” said Philip Velez, a traveler from Sacramento. “I followed the rules, but I won’t stay home before COVID.” Zuniga from New Mexico. About half of Arizona nationals are fully vaccinated. Valley ER doctors like Arya Chowdhury are preparing for more COVID patients due to vacation trips and parties. “We are already seeing patients in the waiting room,” said Dr. Chowdhury. “The hospitals are already full, and that definitely worries many of us.” While some travelers shared the same concern, others did not. “Everyone’s been home for so long,” said Zuniga. “It’s time to stop being so scared.” “We have to fight it and try to make everyone healthy again,” said Sievert. Chowdhury said if you need to travel it is a good idea to get a COVID test when you get home, especially if you have symptoms. Copyright 2021 KPHO / KTVK (KPHO Rundfunkgesellschaft).
