Shaun Chetty, 43, was allegedly hit three times in one fell swoop on July 12 by hacking the handle in front of his Palmview home. He sustained head injuries and died on July 14th at Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital. His neighbor was arrested and an investigation into the death was opened. The neighbor appeared before the Verulam District Court and was released on bail. The matter was adjourned until September 9th. Deon Reddy, the spokesman for Chetty’s family, said, “Shaun and I helped other residents barricade our street because of the riot that day. We were standing in the street when the neighbor started talking about going to sleep and an argument started. “Reddy claimed that the neighbor who had a heel grip hit Shaun on the head.” Local residents around and they were in shock. “Reddy, who wasn’t injured, said Chetty fell.” His head was covered in blood and he couldn’t move. ”He said the neighbor fled and carried Chetty to his car and drove to Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital. Chetty died from his injuries. “It’s hard to accept he’s gone. He tried to protect our community, but he lost his life. We have been friends since childhood and grew up in the area. Shaun wasn’t just my friend. He was my brother. “Reddy said Chetty was self-employed.” He did hydraulic repairs on pallet jacks. He took care of his wife, his daughter who is studying, and his elderly parents. Shaun’s daughter is 20 years old. Now this young person has to grow up without a father. His family will not be closed until the person responsible for his death is behind bars. No one is allowed to take their lives under any circumstances. ”Chetty was cremated in Verulam Crematorium on July 23. Police made no comment at the time of publication.
