Ski stores in the Phoenix area get an early business rush in cooler weather
Phoenix experienced the coldest high temperature since March on October 12th. That, coupled with snow in Flagstaff, meant people were going to the ski shops to prepare for the upcoming ski season. Matt Galka from FOX 10 reports.
PHOENIX – October 12th Phoenix had the coldest high temperature since March and the second coldest ever on October 12th.
The temperature in Phoenix as well as the snowfall in Flagstaff made people think about the ski season, and some ski stores are seeing an early business rush. It’s not exactly ski season yet, but it was enough to motivate some skiers to prepare for the slopes.
“Everyone’s going crazy. It snowed all over Utah, Colorado, South Dakota. Everyone’s excited,” said Susan Kannapel, who owns Ski Pro in Phoenix.
Kannapel said people went in and out all day preparing.
“We usually have to wait a little longer and today, as it is a bit chilly and there is snow, I think it made a difference,” said Kannapel.
Skis had to be waxed and boards mounted. The weather on October 12th brought a nice surprise when you consider that winter won’t start for about 70 days.
“It’s going to be grueling, it’s going to be great. Apparently there will be a lot of snowfall in Arizona,” said Kannapel.
The cooler weather made a nice change for the New England transplants Cody and Samantha.
“The heat definitely took some getting used to, but because of the colder weather I put a sweatshirt in the car today,” said Samantha.
You have already planned your first outing in the snow.
“Somehow I have to go from 110 to 105 to 70. People in sweatshirts at 70. At least where we come from, they’d still be wearing shorts. So I’m enjoying it,” said Cody of the weather.
Temperatures are expected to rise next week.
