PHOENIX (AP) – A deputy of a Phoenix Metro Sheriff who sustained serious injuries from a man he had just arrested died Monday, authorities said. Deputy Juan “Johnny” Ruiz died from injuries sustained Saturday, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone said in a statement. Penzone’s announcement came after a media briefing earlier that day in which he said Ruiz’s family had decided to remove him from life support. “His loss is a tragedy for our profession and our community,” said Penzone. “I undertake to do justice to MP Ruiz against the suspect to the fullest extent of the law. Nothing else is acceptable. ”The family wants to donate their organs. “He’s going to make a sacrifice so that others can benefit,” Penzone said. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey ordered that flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday in honor of Ruiz. The man accused of assaulting Ruiz, 30-year-old Clinton Robert Hurley, remained in stable condition in the hospital on Monday after getting into a shootout with a homeowner. Authorities are expecting additional fees for Hurley. The ordeal began Saturday morning when Ruiz arrested Hurley, for pending arrest warrants, and transferred him to a holding cell at a substation in the suburbs of Avondale, about 17 miles west of Phoenix. According to the police, a hurley is said to have beaten Ruiz without shackles, who had tried several times to call for help over the radio. Authorities say Hurley took keys from a bleeding and unconscious Ruiz and escaped in a rescue vehicle, crashing through a gate. MPs found Ruiz after reports were received that someone was driving a police vehicle under suspicion. He was hospitalized. A manhunt for Hurley followed. Later that day, MPs responded to a shooting in a house in Tonopah, about 83 kilometers west of Phoenix. MPs found a man was fired at the homeowner, Penzone said. The homeowner then shot back and hit the man three times. A bullet left a severe wound. MPs who tried first aid recognized Hurley because of his tattoos, Penzone said. Investigators say Hurley and the homeowner knew each other but didn’t say the nature of their relationship. Hurley was released from an Arizona prison in December after serving a sentence for attempted child molestation, authorities said. As of Monday, it was not known whether he had hired a lawyer to speak for him. Investigators were also looking for a second vehicle that Hurley stole and abandoned while hiding from authorities. Ruiz was in the sheriff’s office for three years. Copyright © 2021. All rights reserved. This website is not intended for users located within the European Economic Area.
