PHOENIX, Jul 21, 2021 / PRNewswire / – In recognition of local progress in the global fight against glioblastoma, Mayor Katharine Gallego of Phoenix and Maricopa County’s Chairman of the Board of Directors have both named Jack Sellers July 21, 2021 as Glioblastoma Awareness Day . Local researchers at the Barrow Neurological Institute and their partners at Global Cancer Technology are currently conducting promising preclinical studies that may offer a treatment for the aggressive brain tumor and a path to a possible cure. Glioblastoma is a currently untreatable form of cancer that kills more than 241,000 people around the world each year, including more than 10,000 Americans. After diagnosis, patients have a life expectancy of 16 months. Despite the death toll, which included President Joe Biden’s son, Beau Biden, and former Arizona Senator John McCain in 2015, in 2018, glioblastoma remains relatively unknown to the public. “The only way to cure this disease once and for all is to make it a household name and make sure it receives the same resources that other, better-known cancers already have,” said Dr. Ekokobe Fonkem, Director of Neuro-Oncology and Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Barrow Neurological Institute. “Proclaiming Glioblastoma Awareness Day in Phoenix and Maricopa Counties is important because it helps us raise awareness about this disease.” GCT and the Barrow Neurological Institute are currently working on preclinical studies to test the effectiveness of two molecules known as PI3K inhibitors. PI3K, or phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase, has been implicated in cellular processes such as cell death, protein synthesis, metabolism, and other activities associated with the lack of regulation of the growth of cancerous tumors. The primary PI3K inhibitor molecule has previously been shown to block aspects of this aberrant activity, while the second molecule, targeting the Vps34 PI3K isoform, hinders the movement of cancer cells and inhibits their ability to kill surrounding healthy cells. But the molecules are special for another reason as well: They are small, and that is important in the fight against brain cancer, because these molecules can get to places that others cannot. “Many molecules are too big to cross the blood-brain barrier,” said Dr. Karen Newell Rogers, Chief Scientific Advisor and Consultant at Global Cancer Technology. “Our GCT molecules are small enough to cross this barrier, which means that the therapeutics can actually get to the tumors one day, helping us to be sure that therapeutics are working for patients, having less toxicity on normal tissues and patients help on their way in the fight against this aggressive disease. We are making great strides. ”Dr. Fonkem added, “The brain tumor community is working as hard as ever to care for our patients with glioblastoma. I am very optimistic that with all the collaborations we are not too far from finding a cure for this disease. “A resolution to proclaim Glioblastoma Awareness Day for July 21, 2021, was unanimously passed by the United States Senate in May 2021. The same resolution was tabled in the House of Representatives.
