Story Links Elon, NC – Charlotte Smith, head coach of Elon University women’s basketball, has announced that 2017 Elon graduate Essence Baucom will join the workforce as an assistant coach. As a two-time team captain, Baucom competed for Phoenix from 2014-17 and spent the past season as an assistant coach at Furman. “We’re excited to have one of our very own on the Elon Women’s Basketball team,” said head coach Charlotte Smith. “Essence was instrumental in building a championship program here at Elon as a player. She had a tireless work ethic and I am confident that she will instill the same mentality in our players.” In their only season with Furman, Baucom helped the Paladins set an 11-14 record that included a 9-1 mark at home. Prior to that, she spent two seasons as a research assistant at NC State and earned her Masters degree. The Phoenix finished the season on a 27-7 record and received an 11-seed in the 2017 NCAA tournament, the program’s first application.
