PHOENIX – Portions of Interstate 17 in Phoenix will be closed Wednesday night to move traffic to the new north side of the near-completed freeway bridge over Central Avenue. The freeway, which was closed Monday night, was also due to be closed to the project Tuesday night, but has been postponed due to rain, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Heading north, I-17 will be closed from the I-10 Split Intersection near Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to Seventh Street from 9:00 p.m. Wednesday through 5:00 a.m. Thursday. Southbound I-17 is closed from Seventh Avenue to Seventh Street from 10:00 PM Wednesday through 4:00 AM Thursday. Motorway traffic shares the southern part of the new bridge, which was completed in February. Not only is the new bridge wider to accommodate plans for additional lanes along I-17, but it also provides more space for commercial vehicles on Central Avenue as well as Valley Metro’s future South Central Avenue light rail line, according to ADOT. The $ 13.5 million project to replace the bridge opened in 1962 began last May and is expected to be completed this fall. It was funded in part by a special sales tax approved by Maricopa County’s voters in 2004.
