PHOENIX – On their website, the apartment complex “The Stewart” in downtown Phoenix offers “19 stories of upscale elegance”.
However, local residents contacted ABC15 with a different story describing a problem-plagued property.
“We spend our hard-earned money on a good place and we have so many problems. Where it is almost uninhabitable,” said one tenant.
The apartments near Central Avenue and Roosevelt Street opened in May 2019. The complex was built by the Empire Group, which only sold the property to New York Life Real Estate Investors in September 2021, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.
The people who call the building home say the problems are not new. However, they claim that things have gotten worse since the official transfer of management on September 9, 2021.
“There are so many problems, I think they were just like that:”[We] have to sell it now before it gets worse, ‘”said Shadá Davis, who has lived at Stewart for a year.
Less than a month after Greystar took over management of the units, an on-site manager had to email residents with the message “… the pool room is flooded again”.
However, when Sharesha Briggs woke up, she hadn’t read this email.
“There was at least four inches of water on the living room floor,” Briggs said. “I thought I left the water on. I ran straight to the sink and thought, what’s wrong?”
She noticed this quickly when she heard the industrial fans whirring from the hallway. Others have noticed too.
“The leak came from the 17th floor to my floor,” said Davis. “I woke up and there were fans and it smelled like mold.”
ABC15 residents said rent ranged from $ 2,200 to $ 3,000 a month.
“The value doesn’t reflect the quality we get everything,” said Brennick Cordova, who said he will be moving out soon.
“When you first come here, you are told about all the amazing things that are here,” said Davis. “Then you come out of this honeymoon phase and you start to see the real thing [The] Stewart. “
Many people referred to this week’s floods as the last straw.
“I honestly wish I had never signed a lease there,” said Marcus Heard Jr.
“I’m going later this month,” said Davis.
“I won’t be here in a month,” said Briggs. “I want you to give me my money back! I’ve already paid for that.
ABC15 repeatedly tried to get a response from the complex about what was being done to correct the physical problems and resolve the nightmare situation for the residents. We have not received any feedback by the deadline.
An on-site manager told ABC15 he would be in touch, but refused to answer questions outside the complex. A Greystar spokeswoman said she had to contact the owners as they only manage the property, but admitted she did not know who exactly is behind the group of owners.
Local residents say they are tired of the mystery and excuses when their carpet is wet and fan noise drowns out the television and work meetings.
