Whenever my editor asks me to make these travel pieces for Texan fans who want to take to the streets and see a game, I always go to the memory banks and get experience. I also do a quick search to make sure I’m not missing anything big. But be aware, this is mostly about me. I have no idea who came up with this, but to say that “dry” makes 105 degrees more bearable is crazy. Even at night, in summer, when you go outside, you have the feeling that someone has left the stove open. It is ridiculous. Yes, Houston is more humid, but easier to take in the summer too. For me, Miami is wetter than Houston and even “easier” than the other two cities. Now that we’ve got that sorted out – I’ve been to the Phoenix area many times. The first time was while reporting on the Fiesta Bowl in 1992. Editor’s note – Vandermeer, are you THAT old ??? I was in diapers in ’92! Yeah, but I was five. Anyway, Johnny Majors was training Tennessee and I was covering Penn State. My little radio station couldn’t afford the trip, so as a former salesman I persuaded her to trade me all expenses for advertising time. You could do that back then. Now the IRS would send a SWAT team for an exam. Not wanting to neglect my experience, I negotiated a week’s stay at the Camelback Inn. It was lovely. Thanks for the question. I wanted to go to a Suns game and meet the great Al McCoy, one of my play-by-play heroes, but couldn’t make it. McCoy says “Shazam!” every time the suns hit a three. He is an absolute legend now in his 50th year. The next bowl I would cover there was the Pro Bowl, which crowned the 2014 season. The biggest memory of the week was our video guru Jay McDevitt, who in action recorded a shot by JJ Watt kicking a field goal. Knowing that he was destroying the internet, Jay ran to upload the video as if he had just discovered the lost treasure. I’ve been to several NFL owners meetings in Phoenix. These are fun events because you get a lot of great information and it’s wild to be on the prawn cocktail line between the likes of Jerry Jones and Andy Reid. Editor’s note – Vandermeer. You went there as the second person as if anyone could go to an owners meeting. What about fans traveling to Phoenix? Good point. There’s the Grand Canyon, but it’s more than three hours away. There is Sedona, but there are two. You can hike Camelback Mountain which is local. There are also lots of great restaurants. Go Texans! The Texans will play against the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on Sunday. Kick-off is at 3:25 p.m. CT on CBS and SportsRadio 610. The next time you see the Texans at NRG Stadium is October 31st, when they host the Los Angeles Rams on week eight. The kick-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT. Click here for tickets.
