PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A man was arrested after strangling his colleague with a piece of metal wire before others stopped him, police say.
On Monday afternoon, police arrived at a local company near 7th Avenue and Broadway Road, where other workers said they had to physically stop 41-year-old Jay Christopher Case from suffocating and killing his colleague. According to the victim, he was working on a sandblasting machine when he saw gloves wrap around his head and felt a metal wire wrap around his neck, making it difficult for him to breathe. The victim said he and Case fell backwards, then kicked Case in the face before colleagues came to help. After Case was stopped, he left the store.
According to court documents, the victim said he did not know why Case attacked him and said he had never had any problems with him. He added it too, and Case rarely spoke to each other. Two witnesses also told police that the two colleagues had minimal contact and were not aware of any problems between the two men.
A witness told officers that he was sitting in his office when he heard screams outside. He went out to find the victim on the floor with the metal wire around his neck, from which blood was oozing. According to court records, Case was standing over the victim, holding him on the floor while pulling the wire up. The witness said he heard the words “I will kill you” during the attack.
A second witness also told police he heard a riot and saw Case choke the victim before lowering them to the ground. While the victim was on the ground, Case continued to hold him and keep choking him, the witness said. The witness said he stopped Case by pulling him away from the victim, but believed that if they didn’t stop him, Case would have killed the other man.
Case was arrested in Tempe on Tuesday and did not answer questions from police. The charges facing the case are pending.
