As a passionate animal rights activist – and a long-time vegan since he was three – one could expect Joker star Joaquin Phoenix to orient his loved ones towards a plant-based lifestyle. But the acclaimed actor, who gave birth to a baby boy to fiancée Rooney Mara last September, has other plans for son River. Instead of “forcing him to veganism”, said Phoenix in a new interview, he will educate him “about the reality” of animal husbandry [he is vegan]but I’m not going to impose my belief on my child, ”he told the Sunday Times in an interview promoting his latest production – a dialogue-free documentary, Gunda, about pig sentience. “I don’t think that’s right. I will educate him about the reality. I’m not going to indoctrinate him with the idea that McDonald’s has a happy meal because there’s nothing damn happy about that meal. (Continued below) “And I’m not going to tell him it’s okay to read books about all the wonderful little farm animals and they say ‘oink oink oink’ and ‘moo moo moo’ and don’t tell him that what is a hamburger. So I’m not going to perpetuate the lie, but I’m not going to force him to be vegan either. I will support him. That’s my plan. ”Later in the interview, Phoenix admitted that he was“ not thrilled ”to give an acceptance speech when he received his 2020 Oscar for Best Actor for Joker, but felt it was important to use the platform to do so advocate veganism. “I was in this situation and part of me just wanted to say, ‘Thank you very much, great, good night,'” he recalls. “But I felt like I had to … When I’m up here, I can’t just thank my mother.” What followed was an emotional speech about “troubling problems” people at the all over the world are faced together. “We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow,” he told the audience. “And when she gives birth, we steal her baby, although her screams of pain are unmistakable, and then we take her milk, which is intended for her calf, and add it to our coffee and cereal.” Subscribe to men’s health newsletters and start your body plan at home.
