NEW YORK, Jul 28, 2021 / PRNewswire / – This summer, July 29th, the latest edition of ancient art will be on display in New York City at Phoenix Ancient Art, the world’s leading trusted antiques dealer. Hicham Aboutaam, President of Electrum, the exclusive agent of Phoenix in New York, will host the gallery exhibition entitled “Fabulous Monsters” until September 30, 2021. The show will feature a selection of over 70 works of art depicting Medusa, Scylla, Griffins, Sphinxes, Sirens, Centaurs, Pegasus and other hybrid and real animals. 2nd – 1st century BC Chr., L: 5 cm The title of the show invites you to be shocked, but you quickly notice that looking at pictures of Greek and Roman monsters, which were responsible for so much folkloric terror, you have nothing to fear. For example, Medusa, one of three powerful winged demons known as the Gorgon, with her round head with coiled snakes instead of curls of hair and staring eyes that turn you to stone with a glance, is the most obvious example of dangerous beauty. Their embellished post-neoclassical adaptation was famously used as a decorative element in Versace fashion design. The exhibit features a stunning Hellenistic Greek chalcedony cameo of Medusa from the 2nd – 1st centuries v the sides. She is breathtaking. How could she cause so much horror? Also on display is another dangerous beauty called Scylla, the sea monster that Homer described in the famous Odyssey as “a terrifying monster; no one could see her and still be happy, not even a god if he walked that path” The exhibited Greek terracotta figure is hardly terrifying as she is sitting on a wave, her lower body is depicted as double fish tails, and the buildings of Madison Avenue as her landscape. And a thousand years ago a large Kornelstein (1375-1250 BC) with two heraldic griffins from the Mycenaean civilization can be seen alongside several other colorful gemstones. 2021, through September 30, 2021, at Electrum, 725 Fifth Avenue, 19th Floor, New York, NY 10022M-F 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM ABOUT PHOENIX ANCIENT ART, with galleries in New York City (Electrum) and Geneva, Switzerland, is Phoenix Ancient Art one of the world’s leading dealers of rare and exquisite antiques with a focus on Greek and Roman, Near Eastern and Egyptian art.
