CHANDLER, Arizona (AP) – The Gila River Indian Community gambling operation has begun construction of its fourth casino on Metro Phoenix.

Gila River Hotels & Casinos held a groundbreaking on Monday for the proposed Santan Mountain Casino, which will be located in the Chandler area near Gilbert Road and the Hunt Highway.

The 65-acre, $ 160 million project will include more than 850 slot and table games, a BetMGM sportsbook, and multiple dining options for guest use. New games include mini baccarat, craps, and roulette.

Two of the tribe’s current casinos are also in the Chandler area. The other is on the southwest edge of the subway area.

The tribe announced the new casino project last summer after signing a revised gambling contract with the state.

The Gambling Expansion Legislation, approved by state lawmakers at the behest of Governor Doug Ducey, included provisions that allowed tribes to increase their gambling offerings in terms of both the number of casinos and the types of gambling.

Arizona currently has 24 tribal casinos across the state, including seven in Metro Phoenix.

The legislation will allow up to 11 nationwide, including four in Metro Phoenix and one in the Tucson area.
