- Chris Paul believes Suns fans shouldn’t worry about Deandre Ayton’s extension talks
- Adrian Wojnarowski first reported that the suns are reluctant to offer him a maximum deal
- Suns player Mikal Bridges is also up for an extension this season
Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul assured fans of the team that there is nothing to be concerned about Deandre Ayton’s situation.
Paul spoke to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith about First Take and had this to say about the situation in Ayton.
“I’m not worried, I’m not worried. That’s the business side of the game, you know, ”Paul said coolly to the athlete.
“These contract talks are taking place. Players, agents, all that stuff. Hopefully the stuff will take care of itself so we can play again and do what we do. “
NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski first broke news that talks stalled after the Suns hesitated to offer a maximum rookie contract extension to their first overall selection in 2018.
Suns fans firmly believe Ayton is worth the max contract after his stellar performance last season, highlighted by his victorious dunk against Ivica Zubac in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reiterated Paul’s views as the Suns might just ask if Ayton would be willing to take less than the maximum to facilitate the extension of his classmate, Mikal Bridges.
“Perhaps this reported impasse is not a cause for concern. Maybe the Suns are just looking to see if they can sign Ayton for less and if they find they can’t, give him the maximum deal, ”he wrote.
Many believe that Bridges in the ballpark is an extension like that of Denver Nuggets striker Michael Porter Jr.
The All-Star Point Guard also mentioned Bridges in his appearance on First Take and praised him for playing such a large role in the Sun’s surprising run to the NBA title.
“Man, we’ve learned so much. We lost to a good team, a good one [Milwaukee] Bucks team, ”said Paul Smith in the same interview.
“Of course there are a lot of things that I think I could have done better, things that we could have done better as a team. But you learn from it and carry on. “
The Suns win a 117-105 preseason win against the Los Angeles Lakers and are currently 1-1 when they face the Lakers again on October 10 at the Staples Center.
