A section of Interstate 10 eastbound that approaches downtown Phoenix will be closed to tarmac removal this weekend (Nov. 19-22) as part of an ongoing road improvement project, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Eastbound I-10 will be closed between 43rd Avenue and I-17 “Stack” intersection from 9:00 pm Friday to 5:00 am Monday (November 22nd). The ramps of Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to the north, including the HOV Lane ramp, to eastbound I-10 will also be closed along with eastbound I-10 driveways at 67th and 51st Avenues. Work to improve the rough road conditions along I-10 will be carried out before the traditional holiday travel time, which begins with Thanksgiving week. Detour: Drivers traveling east on I-10, including those heading to Sky Harbor, East Valley, or Tucson Airport, may consider exiting Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) south / east east of 67th Avenue and into close to Chandler Boulevard to get back on I-10 in the Ahwatukee area. Motorists can also get off at the closure and head east on Van Buren Street or McDowell Road before joining I-10 on 19th or Seventh Avenue. Drivers traveling east on I-10 in the West Valley and planning to travel to the northern Phoenix area also have the option to use north loop 101 or loop 303 to reach I-17. ADOT’s $ 12 million road improvement project between I-17 and Avondale Boulevard began in September (2021) and is expected to be completed by summer 2022. Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov or by calling 511. ADOT also provides information and updates through its Twitter feed @ArizonaDOT.
