ADOT Begins Negotiations On Large I-17 Widening Project That Would Include “Flex Lanes” Between Phoenix And Flagstaff – KAFF News – Flagstaff

The Arizona Department of Transportation is negotiating with construction and engineering firms over a massive project to aid traffic flow on Interstate-17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff. According to ADOT, the 23-mile project will include eight miles of “flex lanes,” which are two lanes that would run south along I-17. The lanes could be used for journeys north or south as required. The lanes could be used to divert traffic from an accident, forest fire, or medical emergency. The over $ 360 million project will expand a 23 mile stretch of highway from Anthem to Sunset Point. The Flex Lane project and idea was born out of the need to improve I-17, as traffic can decrease for miles on a Friday northbound or on a Sunday southbound. Flex Lanes are used in Texas, California, and Florida. Construction of the project is scheduled to begin next year and will last three years.
