Award-winning actress Sharon Stone has been appointed to the board of trustees of the Phoenix-based Barrow Neurological Foundation. According to the announcement, Stone, who suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm in 2001 that resulted in a massive stroke, is writing to Barrow President and CEO and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, Dr. Michael Lawton, in saving her life. “Most of the people who go through what happened to me do not survive, let alone recover. I can go today because of Dr. Lawton be here and talk, ”Stone said in a statement. Stone’s chances of surviving the surgery were slim, only 1%, but Lawton took the chance and performed life-saving surgery. Because of her ordeal, Stone became passionate about brain research and a strong advocate of brain health, warning women about the risks of stroke, Barrow Neurological Foundation announcement.
