PHOENIX – A suspect was in custody after a police chase in northern Phoenix resulted in a collision with three vehicles and closed Interstate 17 south for four hours on Friday, authorities said. The chase began after a motorcycle officer attempted to stop a blue limousine as it sped south on I-17 near Yorkshire Drive at around 9 a.m. Andy Williams said in an email. The suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Colin Downs, fired a pistol from the vehicle at the officer before exiting the highway on Greenway Road, Williams said. When Downs got out, he collided with a large rental car and a white SUV, Williams said. The officers arrested the suspect at the scene of the accident and took him to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Three adults in the rental car were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect will be arrested for grievous bodily harm after he is released from the hospital, Williams said. Heading south, I-17 on Deer Valley Road to just south of Greenway Road will be closed at around 9:45 a.m. and reopened at 1:45 p.m. Follow @ KTAR923 We’d like to hear from you.
