Phoenix Concludes Nonconference Slate with 2-0 Shutout Against Furman

Next game: at UNCW 09/26/2021 | 1:00 p.m. ELON, NC – The Elon University women’s soccer team scored their fifth shutout of the season and third straight win on Sept. 17 when they beat reigning Southern Conference (SoCon) champions Furman 2-0 in their last non-conference game of the season. “That was an excellent win against a very good team,” said head coach Neil Payne. “It’s a perfect warm-up for our conference play start next week. We played extremely well. There are still a few things we need to clean up, but that’s the nice thing about this team. We always try to keep each other up every day and we will do that this week. Really confident after this result not only into the next week, but also into the conference play. ” THE RUNDOWN – Less than five minutes into the game, Katie Lowe found Carson Jones, who found the back of the net to improve the Phoenix 1-0. -The Phoenix had two extra chances to score in the last nine minutes of half but both shots were saved to keep the 1-0 at half. -Jones doubled the Elon score in the 56th minute when she sank a shot in the middle of the net to match her career high for single-game goals. -Furman made his last two shots on goal in the 60th and 63rd minutes, but both were saved by McKenna Dalfonso to secure the shutout for the Phoenix. NOTES -Jones’ goals and points (4) in the night brought a new team into the season. -Lowes assist on first goal marks the first of her career. -In goal Dalfonso (5-3) scored a total of four saves over the course of the game. After today’s game, the runner-up leads the conference in shutouts per game (0.625). Tonight’s game marked the first two-goal game for Jones since the 2019 season, when the Phoenix defeated Towson 3-1. -Although excluded, the paladins topped the maroon and gold with a 13-8. -All five Elon wins this season have been shutouts so far. -The win is only the fifth of all time against the Paladins (5-12-1). The last win against Furman came on October 13, 2013, when the maroon and gold was a member of SoCon (4-3). – With the win, Elon improves to 5-3 in the season while Furman drops to 4-2-1.
