3 dead, 1 hurt in shooting in west Phoenix

Three people were killed and one seriously injured in a shooting in a parking lot in western Phoenix early Friday.

Police identified the victims as Victor Manuel Cruz, 19, Avery Young, 19, and Salvador Gomez Medina, 16, on Friday afternoon.

The three victims died at the shooting just after midnight near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, police said. Another teenager was injured and in critical condition but was expected to be survive, according to to spokesman for Sgt. Andy Williams of the Phoenix Police Department.

Detectives believe the two groups met in the parking lot of a nearby store to “conduct a transaction” coordinated through social media, according to a statement from Phoenix police. The type of exchange is unknown.

At some point the meeting escalated into a shootout between the two groups, the police said

More than 20 shots were fired in the shots that occurred at the southeast corner of the intersection.

According to the police, all five people involved have been arrested. An uninjured man was taken into custody. Nobody else was hurt.

Investigators stayed on Friday to look for evidence and witnesses.
