Former PHX fire chief Alan Brunacini influenced tens of thousands of firefighters around the world. A new building in downtown PHX honors his life and legacy with a mural of his “Timeless Tactical Truths”. Mural on the side of a central Phoenix building on Osborn Road near Seventh Street honors the life and legacy of Brunacini, who served as the city’s fire chief from 1978 to 2006. The mural shows a firefighter with bright yellow switches working on a fire hydrant with hundreds of feet of yellow fire hose painted along the base of the building. The hose leads to the “Charlie” side of the building, which is fire language for the back of the building. There you will get a full account of the legacy and personality of the man known for his safety and kindness: “It is a kind of fire fighter who sprays water and it is the writing and wisdom of Alan Brunacini and he was known for that – as the little phrase, ‘timel tactical truths were called,’ Nick Brunacini told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday. Nick Brunacini is one of the sons of the late former Phoenix Fire Chief. He owns the building where a plan was developed to continue his father’s legacy. Since Chief Brunacini’s retirement, the family has founded a company that trained fire fighters around the world with the knowledge from his 50-year firefighting career. Chief Brunacini wrote several books and manuals on various training courses that focused on firefighter safety and operational management. He recognized a gap in fire brigade training for commanders. Together with his sons, who were also firefighters, Brunacini developed the Blue Card training, a program that trains operations managers in uniformly monitoring and managing emergencies. With this uniquely renovated building from the 1970s, the Brunacini family wants to invite firefighters from all over the world to training seminars. The building, which simulates the floor plan of a fire station with bay doors and a captain’s residence, includes several conference rooms in which fire brigade members can meet from September to study together. Just as the former fire chief wanted to make the Phoenix fire department a better place to work, his son wants to do just that for other fire departments who want to find out more. Chief Brunacini made his mark on Phoenix and the fire department for a variety of reasons, but one that will last forever is now on the building – “Be nice”.
