PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – A person was killed in a fiery crash on Loop 202 (South Mountain) in Phoenix on Saturday morning. It happened around 9:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes on 17th Avenue. Map: Loop 202 South Mountain on 17th Avenue According to Captain Todd Keller of the Phoenix Fire Department, one of the cars in the two vehicle wreck caught fire and was fully involved when the fire brigade arrives. He said the person in that car was pronounced dead at the scene. According to DPS, a white Chevrolet pickup from 1995 had a mechanical defect on Loop 202 to the east. He came to a stop in the left lane when he was hit from behind. The driver of the pickup, 30-year-old Luis Manuel Granados, was in the truck at the time of the fire. The driver of the other car was only slightly injured. Impairment did not appear to be a factor and no citations were issued, says DPS. ADOT tweeted a photo of the fire spewing a column of smoke into the air, saying the wreck was blocking all lanes. A live ADOT camera on 17th Avenue showed traffic entering a lane and slowly driving past on the right shoulder. The traffic safety was considerable. The motorway reopened shortly before 1 p.m. Copyright 2021 KPHO / KTVK (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation). All rights reserved.
