A massive pivot door allows an interior to open onto a covered patio at casiTa, an Arizona guest house designed by The Ranch Mine architects. The 90 square meter guest house is located on urban land in a residential area in Phoenix. The Ranch Mine built the casiTa guest house in Phoenix, designed for the back yard of the Foo House, which was also designed by local studio The Ranch Mine. The large “T” in the project name – casiTa – alludes to the T-shaped floor plan of the building. The guest house accommodates the external family members of the customer, who like to visit for a longer period of time. “They got so many visitors – especially in the fall, winter and spring months when the weather in Phoenix is fantastic compared to most other places,” said the architects. “They needed a place for long-term guests.” A wide roof hovers over the terrace to create a sheltered outdoor space. While it is a desert climate in its current location, the building has been designed with minor modifications to adapt to a variety of environments, such as: B. the inclusion of an inner chimney or individual surfaces. Easy-care materials such as concrete slabs, light-colored stucco and steel were used for the outer walls. On the east side, the flat roof of the house extends outwards and shadows both a spacious terrace and glazed walls that enclose part of the house. The underside of the roof is lined with stained plywood in a custom pattern. Inside the guest house there is a concrete floor. Inside, the house consists of an open space for living, dining and cooking and two symmetrical bedrooms flanking a bathroom and laundry room. Neutral colors and simple finishes can be found everywhere, like white drywall and concrete floors. The door swings out to open the space to the terrace. The rooms are furnished with contemporary decor chosen by the clients, including a streamlined gray sofa and wooden dining set. In the bedrooms, natural light streams in through tall, rectangular windows. The house can be extended outside thanks to a massive pivot door that is 3.7 meters wide and weighs 340 kilograms. Olson Kundig designs a glass cabin with drawbridge-style shutters “The door opens the living area with a simple push of the terrace covered by the cantilevered roof, adding an additional 255 square meters of living space,” said the team. Stucco and steel are used for the exterior cladding. Established in 2010, The Ranch Mine has completed a number of modern style homes in the Phoenix area. Others are the O-Asis House, which is built around a central courtyard, and the Pleats House, which is clad to the ribbed outside of the cacti. Photography is from Roehner + Ryan.
