National Theater Live Frankenstein returns When Benedict Cumberbatch and Johny Lee Miller stepped on a London stage for the 2011 National Theater production of Frankenstein, they played to a sold-out audience. Danny Boyle, whose other credits include Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire, directed the production, in which the actors take turns playing the lead roles of the so-called monster and the man who made him from the body parts of dead people. National Theater filmed the production for its National Theater Live series, which means you can still experience their captivating versions of these classic roles. Mesa Community College, 1833 West Southern Avenue, Mesa, will show Frankenstein Live at the MCC Theater National Theater Live on Friday, August 20, at 7:00 p.m.: Frankenstein. Tickets are $ 15. With issues like climate change, war, immigration, and public health at the forefront of political rhetoric, it’s the perfect time to revisit that story of the horrors of hubris. The current, reigning and defending Universal Champion and “Head of the Table” is a cruel, arrogant and titled hacker who rules the company’s weekly Friday Night SmackDown show like a mob boss and feels like the world (and the fan base the WWE) feels. owes him her thanks. In other words, feel free to boo the bastard when the latest episode of SmackDown airs from the Footprint Center at 201 East Jefferson Street on Friday August 20th. will be a focus of the program, which later this weekend leads into the annual SummerSlam pay-per-view. It also introduces the latest developments in the story with Shinsuke Nakamura, Baron Corbin, tag team champions Rey and Dominik Mysterio, and others. The wrestling action begins at 4:45 p.m. Tickets cost $ 20 to $ 65. Benjamin Leatherman Killer Queen Burlesque Show To paraphrase the late Freddie Mercury, Queen concerts shouldn’t be live renditions of their songs, but rather theatrical events. Fittingly, the performers on the Killer Queen Burlesque Show will embody this exaggerated spirit when they perform on Friday, 20 Allee. There won’t be dynamite or laser beams, but local musician Brandon Ridolpho will portray Mercury while a band plays Queens hits and includes burlesque dancer Monica Alexandra, aerialist Michelle Milan and fire artist Jen Burden Blossom. The show starts at 10:00 p.m. General admission is $ 45, and VIP options, which include dinner and premium seating, cost $ 75 to $ 130. Tickets and further information are available here. New Times Archives Phinger Phest Local bands come and go, but Dephinger’s underdogs have been on the Phoenix scene for more than two decades. When the scrap rock band formed in 2000, their MO consisted of “basically getting as wasteful and sucking as possible” while poorly playing bastardized arena rock and spitting out lyrics that would make GG Allin blush . Dephinger has changed things over the years (including moving to a more punk sound, some line-up changes, and the occasional pause), but they still have a yen for playing loud, fast-paced, disgusting rock. They do this again during Phinger Phest on Friday August 20 and Saturday August 21 at Chopper John’s, 2547 East Indian School Road. Dephinger will headline both nights of the event, which will also include sets from Phoenix Hooker Cops, Quantum Colossus, Sewer Gap, Loserfur, The Declaimed, Psycloptopus, Bee Keeper and TV Tragedy. The music starts at 9 p.m. and entry is free. Benjamin Leatherman ‘Off the Clock’ Most people go to art museums and galleries and believe that all of the creativity in their midst is on the walls around them. But exhibitions of work by staff, which are regularly held at places like the Phoenix Art Museum, show that people working behind the scenes often spend time creating their own pieces of art. Case in point: The new Off the Clock exhibition at Vision Gallery, 10 East Chicago Street, Chandler. The gallery features artwork by more than two dozen city employees, including Peter Bugg, Cynde Cerf, Savana Martinez, and Michaal Winer. Together they work for 11 municipal departments. But here you can see the art they bring to life in their free time. Like other exhibitions the gallery has presented over the years, the exhibition encompasses a fascinating variety of media, themes, and styles. Admission is free. Be one of the first to get a good look on Saturday, August 21st, when the Vision Gallery is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, could just be one of the valley’s many talented emerging artists.
